Indeed. As you point out by example, the desire for a common, familiar environment is a strong one. The critical mass that Windows has achieved in other areas is now exploding into the scientific/engineering battlefield.

Other factors are, of course, cost and internal standardization. Besides the generally lower costs of the NT offerings, there is the matter of eliminating the need for intermixed Unix workstations separate from Windows desktop machines, which combination is often found at the engineering department level - and even on many individual desktops! NT's coming of age now enables a multitude of cost savings while enhancing productivity.

Is it any wonder that it is happening so rapidly?
