At 23, Justin Cannon is a man on his way up. In just 14 months as a business-to-business sales representative at Dell, which is based in Round Rock, Texas, he has been promoted four times. The secret of his success? "Online training," he says. Cannon has spent more than 1,000 hours exploiting Dell's computer-based tutoring system. "I enjoy it more than sitting in a classroom," he says, "and it has allowed me to learn as fast as I want." The company's learning department is constantly producing new courses so self-starters can move along at their own pace. Significantly, Dell still uses classrooms for role playing and other situations in which interaction is essential, and human instructors are easily accessible to answer questions about online tutorials.
