albert, Re: "I thought that the goals of any public company is to act in the interest of their shareholders?"

Was AMD acting in the interest of their shareholders when they dropped their prices to a $65 ASP in the third quarter, just in order to maintain their trend of record volumes, and to satisfy the ego of their CEO, who wanted to claim 30% market share?

Was Jerry Sanders' chair to the University of Illinois an act in the interest of AMD's shareholders?

While you nickel and dime Intel for cutting prices in 2001, at least they posted a *profit*. AMD ended up with a loss because their ambitions exceeded their capacity to execute. That is *not* acting in the interest of their shareholders.

Intel may have done more than necessary to compete, but it's a moot point.

That's because one company ended up with a profit for 2001, and the other ended up with a loss. I don't think I need to explain which is which to you, but in terms of upholding the interests of their shareholders, at least one of these companies - the same one that posted *earnings* - has a very good excuse why earnings aren't as large as they were the previous year.

The other company - the same one that posted a *loss* - is the one that claims world class yields, record unit volumes, and the world's fastest and most competitive CPU - and has most informed investors scratching their heads in disbelief.
