If anything, I'm all for getting rid of the stigma against welfare recipients. Adding to their shame only increases the cycle of dependency, for these people will feel more and more discouraged to pull themselves out of the cycle.

I guess it all goes back to the notion of doing things all the way, or not at all. If we're going to give welfare, let's also provide enough to make the recipients more responsible and accountable to themselves. Let's not toss in other things like day care into the welfare mix. That only encourages more people to take the free ride than try and earn it themselves. After all, people need to know that there is no such thing as a free ride.

By the way, sorry to hear about your friend. At least you recognize that welfare is not going to solve his problems. I wish it were that easy, though.
