Thread ... interesting post from "Scott" over on the GTR board. Info on pricing, availability, and volumes of Globalstar handsets. Background is that the G* launch has slipped ... no pun intended ... sat launches have slipped and the service launch has slipped. G* is not telling investors what the story is ... the GSTRF thread is a real piss and moan session ... but it does appear that service launch is 1Q 2000 ... which delightfully maps to the PO which Valence has received ... nice confirmation.

<< I spoke to GSTRF investor relations 212-338-5345) today, Globalstar USA (1-877-728-7466) the US distributer, and the Florida distributer to glean the following information.

-- The commercial service is still slated to start in the first quarter 2000.

-- I can buy a phone RIGHT NOW from GMPCS the florida distributer during the soft roll out phase but service HAS NOT BEEN APPROVED by the FCC. Investor relations denies this(Mack @ 212-33-5345) but Globalstar USA says the reason is related to the FBI requiring phone taps and since some of the base sations are on the US/Canada border the Canadian government has objected. At any rate Mack said that FCC approval is "weeks away".

-- John at GMPCS (954-973-3100)has quoted me the following rates. The phone is $1495,the car attachment(to get signals inside of a car)is
an additional $999.If you want to purchase a fixed unit for a cabin which contains what is needed inside and out it's $2500.

-- Minute costs have several packages....$29.95/monthly plus $1.69 per minute but packages of prebought minutes can be purchased as low as $1.39/minute and volume discounts can be worked out individually probably for less. However,John does NOT see a rate as low as 99 cents.

-- Mack at investor relations was very candid with me and said everything is RIGHT ON TRACK as far as what they have told the press. He said some analysts have made some mistakes in their reporting but most haven't.He said they absolutely want to make sure they have enough handsets to avoid the iridium mistake. They should have 45,000 available worldwide by the end of the year and by Jan/2000 should be producing 40,000 per month or a total of 525,000 by year end 2000. >>
