I didn't mean to imply that I don't appreciate his work, with the exception of the one I mentioned. Tess of the D'Urbervilles, Far from the Madding Crowd, The Return of the Native, The Mayor of Casterbridge, even The Well Beloved I very much enjoyed, although the style could get a bit awkward at times. However, I do agree that as a novelist, he was rooted in the nineteenth century.

As a poet, he is another matter. Perhaps part of the reason is that so much of his published poetry was later in his life as an artist, although he had been writing poetry since, what, the 1860s? What do you think of "The Ruined Maid" and The Dynasts?
