Actually he HAD a deferment - it ran out when he graduated from Yale. It was his second deferment request that was declined. That's what led him to "volunteer" for the Navy.

BTW, though I was only in grade school and middle school during Vietnam, even I knew that "volunteering" for the service branch of your choosing was better than letting yourself get drafted.
