FIGAZI, Indirect costs are in the 30 to 100% range (If a researcher received $100,000, an additional $30,000 to $100,000 would go to the institution - the per cent varies because different institutions cover different things, but indirects apply to all government grants and the percentage is negotiated between the government and the institution). The indirect money goes to the administration and is not seen by the researcher. The Stanford audit focused on what was and what was not allowable as an indirect research cost. The amount in question was trivial and Stanford paid the government the disputed charges, which I'm fairly certain were far less than the cost of the audit.
