I think the inherent safety of the Mn version is clearly supported by the efforts of Delphi to apply it to vehicles in various ways. I've been told those batteries resemble large blocks of wood, and of course the contained energy must be awesome.

A couple of years ago there was also that published article by someone from ULBI describing a large, block-like battery (which I believe was of the Mn type) they had constructed in order to get a very high energy content, and to test its reaction to severe abuse. I recall that they drilled holes through it while fully charged, etc, and only lost a few percent of it's charge capacity. They short circuited it when fully charged, and severely overcharged it as well. According to the story they could only get it to become luke warm, and it eventually just died without any pyrotechnics or other severe reaction. I'm not at all surprised.
