AMD forced the transition to Athlon/Duron because K6-2 was no where near competitive with Coppermine. It wasn't even competitive with Celeron. This is not the case with Athlon versus P4. If Athlon XP can ramp in performance to match the P4 Celeron, AMD will have little incentive to deliberately migrate Clawhammer into the value segment. In this case, AMD's mix of ThoroughbredS and 90nm Clawhammer processors at the end of 2004 would probably resemble the current mix of Athlon and Duron processors.

If however, Athlon XP can not keep up with the performance of P4 Celeron, AMD will have little choice but to migrate Clawhammer into the value segment, and will probably reach 80% conversion by mid-2004. My guess is that, without increasing the number of layers of metalization for ThoroughbredS, Athlon XP will not be able to keep pace with the P4 Celeron.
