Both Modems are pre-standard. Both will have to upgrade to the UTI standard when issued. URS has tried to muddy the water to solidify their perceived lead. The whole issue of holding a patent IMHO was designed to buy time to solidify their lead.

Te testing results indicate that USR will get a free ride from Lucent and be able to adopt their technology for free.

The emergance of actual comparative testing has burst the USR/3Com bubble and now they must allow the international standards to go forward. As a shareholder of both 3Com and Ascend I aslo have some mixed feelings.

My belief is that now many people will do as I did and email their ISP that they want the best service available, not some highly advertised junk. Today I put my money where my mouth is and bought back into Ascend.

3Com still has they marketing lead. They have a greater installed base because they were first to market. Fortunately for Ascend and the other flex vendors the time lead was not sufficient to solidify the lead.

Compare Lucnet and USR. For nearly a century Lucent (previously Bell Labs) has been setting standards for various industries. USR never did know all of the bugs of their first operating system. Which company would you bet on?
