If you understand that motivation to offer the iPhone, you understand that the carrot of increased data sales is the main driver rather than a stick/contractual commitment.


Conversely, that would mean that China Unicom and China Telecom cutting their iPhone subsidies means that they werent seeing sufficient returns to justify the previous rate of subsidization.

I like removing the uncertainty by getting the upfront guarantees.
