But I stubbornly believe that buying will begin soon.

IMO "the average investor" is a buy and hold investor, who doesn't look at their portfolio daily (or hourly) and maybe checks their portfolio once a month or once a quarter. The posters on SI primarily seem to be very short term traders.

IMO some investors who have other professions, or other interests....and who don't follow the daily ups and downs of the market...might see today as a good buying opportunity in specific stocks.

I don't think we can always "time" the market for a perfect entry in various market positions....but if an investor is planning on holding long term a position in a specific stock...then some great buys seem to be crossing my personal radar lately.
