Re: how and when does AMD ever get taken seriously as other than a PC, W/S and small server chip vendor, and the last not even to the big OEMs?

The existence of Sledgehammer may substantially assist AMD in its efforts to gain entry into the W/S and small server segments from tier 1 OEMs, even if none of them support Sledgehammer.

I also think that some of the more die-hard RISC fans at Microprocessor Reports are loath to accept the possibility that SUN could move to a CISC processor like Hammer. Now that Intel has made it clear that the processor road comes to a dead end without SOI, SUN's Sparc fabbed by SOI-less TI could be coming to the end of its road.

If there is no Sledgehammer support from HP/Compaq, AMD would lose nothing by giving SUN a multiyear exclusive on Sledgehammer.

Being the only vendor with big-iron compatible with the huge installed base of X86 software might be enough for SUN to go for it - there would be no reason for them to worry about their acceptance of an X86 box casting a pall over SUN sales, since only SUN would have such a box.

What might stop SUN from supporting Sledgehammer would be if Sledgehammer systems were also available from HP/Compaq - since SUN's customers might then see that as an endorsement of HP/Compaq products.

There is a good chance that HP/Compaq will find it necessary to provide at least minimal support for Sledgehammer just to stop that from happening.

Wheels within wheels, eh? It'll be interesting to see how it plays out.
