Given what my father did for a living, you could imagine what was on his mind. He could only ever sleep during the day, presumably some sort of lifelong post traumatic stress disorder is the best explanation. He considered the act of making choices to be very important.

I recall during my entire youth, he would put me through tests, to see if I could do the right thing at the right time. He considered this to be the most important aspect of leadership. He said to me that one must always have contingency plans because the lives of the men we lead are at stake. If we do the wrong thing, people are killed.

He told me that one must always determine if a certain course of action is morally correct in the absolute sense, and in dire situations, instead of using word play or political B.S. to justify doing something that is morally wrong, to simply acknowledge that it had to be done and get on with it.

I guess this is not the politically correct kind of thinking that we expect in this day and age, but I think we may be staring down some of choices of this nature in the days to come.
