Offers carrier-class ATM switch -- Lucent unveils family of
data gear

Lucent and other equipment providers are positioning themselves to take
advantage of a major change that will hit the public network in the next
several years. "Everybody knows that IP is going to be the basis for all of the
major revenue-generating services in the 21st century," said Mr. Nolle of
CIMI Corp. He predicted that public network carriers will have to spend
somewhere between $200 billion and $600 billion in the first five years of the
next century to remake their networks.

Lucent will be competing with companies such as Ascend Communications
Inc., Cisco Systems Inc., Northern Telecom Inc. and others for a big piece of
