One possibility is that AMD, Cyrix, IDT processors will use a writeable control store so that the definitions of the MMX instructions can be redefined in microcode. This would be a clever way to "beat Intel to market" yet retain future compatibility if needed.

This should be quite compatible with the AMD design since the microcode basically is just a list of RISC-86 instructions scheduled and executed by the core CPU.

Its understandable that AMD would prefer that a revolutionary feature like this not be disclosed until necessary.
