In House Manufacturing ...

Allen,

<< Samsung and Nokia do use the same factories as Apple, but also their own. I did know that they had their own factories, too. >>

They really don't use the same factories as Apple. An exception in the Nokia case may be their CDMA2000 products which they outsourced in 2007 to ODMs like China Tech Faith and Compal but that has been a tiny portion of their output. In 2009 in the height of the recession they brought most engine module production that they had outsourced back in house. Recently they did outsource their new Lumia series WinPhones to Compal because of their experience with Qualcomm silicon supply and goods manufacture but that's all being brought back in house and CDMA2000 products will be brought back in as well. With these exceptions Nokia relied on ODMs for production flexibility in peak seasons but virtually all final assembly and test has been in house from even before the dawn of the digital era in the early to mid-nineties. This gave them a competitive advantage in COGS and quality assurance over their traditional major competitors (Motorola, Ericsson, Sony Ericsson, Siemens, et al) who increasing;y outsourced the majority of their production.

Samsung produces virtually all its own manufactured goods although they too rely on contract suppliers for componentry. Likewise LGE.

In the Nokia and Samsung cases collocated component supply is not necessarily dedicated to just Nokia or Samsung but these facilities are not factories producing finished product. For all 3 of the top mobile phone volume producers finished goods manufacture is a core competency. They are Original Equipment Manufacturers in more than just name.

Best,

- Eric -
