I can't remember the name of it off the top of my head. In "the day", we called it a "memo" field.

Just looked it up. SQL Server calls it a "text" field. Can have essentially an unlimited number of characters in each record. I'm sure SI does it the same way. I'm not aware of there being many choices available when you need to store something that could be 1 character or 100,000 characters.

SQL Server makes available a background service called something like "Full-Text Search". It automagically maintains an index of all the words occurring in a specified text field and lets you use CONTAINS() and a few other functions against it.

It can also do pretty advanced stuff. Like Soundex and Relevance. But it's pretty slow, at least on my hardware. Should be better once I've replaced the database server and use the old one just for handling ads and searches. Or the new box might be able to do it all without outside help. That was my experience with the webserver. It was swamped and the box I replaced it with is still only running at about 25% average utilization several months and a whole lot more traffic later.
