Did you catch Tom Friedman's speech to the John's Hopkins center for international studies this weekend? I recommend that you look for CSPAN programming and watch a re-run if they have one.

It was a fine speech. While I disagree with certain aspects of it, he correctly concludes the war is necessary and should be done. His complaints centered around the methodology.

In particular, his characterization of "OIL", not as the reason behind the war, but as the reason Saddam must be unseated by outside forces -- since the oil effectively provides the funding to enable Saddam to hold on.

He also correctly pointed out the strong desire amongst those nations for which the oil revenue is no longer sufficient to move toward democracy.

I believe he made a great case for the notion that, given a chance, Iraq will choose democracy for itself.
