Re: USBL

Disclaimer: The following is background information on professional basketball and in NO way should be construed as a thumbs up or thumbs down on USBL's stock. I just thought it might be of interest to someone who did not follow basketball.

Unlike professional baseball, which has a minor league system, professional basketball teams get the majority of their players from the college ranks. One of the most exciting events in all of sports, IMO, is the NCAA tournament (aka March Madness), where 64 of the best college teams compete for the national championship. CBS carries this event live for an entire week; college basketball is big business and the best college players get astronomical salaries in the NBA (National Basketball Association)..

Players that do not get selected out of college are prime candidates for the USBL since there is nowhere else in America for them to showcase their talent. However, with non-American players getting better, the USBL will probably be only one place pro teams might look for "hidden" talent. On the other hand, there is always the possibility that the better foreign players might come to the USBL for a higher profile. I guess this balances the recruitment angle.

As for entertainment value, well, with college being so exciting and, of course, the NBA expanding, I think there is plenty other good basketball to see. Two years ago, here in CT, the lady Huskies of the University of Connecticut recently went undefeated to win the Woman's National Championship. This is considered a watershed in the evolution of a woman's pro basketball league. Indeed there are TWO. One is the ABL; it is in existence now. The other, starting next year, is the WNBA, the sister league of the NBA. Each has signed their own "superstars". Each is busy getting franchises. If I, personally, had to choose between a WNBA game or a USBL game I would choose the WNBA game in a heartbeat. Since woman do not (yet) dunk, their game is exciting in a whole different way than the men's game.

Again, Shawn is usually correct in his stock picks, and he is only advocating a short-term position, so there may be a good opportunity to get in and out before the dust settles. Good luck!
