jiggy, the latest Cyrix chip announcement claims it will outperform a 200 MHz Pentium. It actually runs at 150 MHz clock speed. They do it with some whippy architectural tricks like out of order completion, multibranch prediction, register renaming and several other tricks. Of course, this extra stuff, and their older, bigger transistor gate/source/drain sizes (what Paul explained so well in #1609) make their chip much bigger. This leads to more power, poorer yield hence higher manufacturing cost.

You never see Cyrix comparing their chips to Pentium Pro, though.
