I evaluate technology for companies and consult on IT strategy. A few years ago I evaluated all the major cloud providers, including IBM. To say that their offerings were abysmal would be an understatement. So much so that even IBM conceded that they have no chance to compete and said their focus is on the next generation of cloud.

It really takes a lot for a company to officially say, yes we suck. Consider us for the next gen, not this one.

Here's what very few people outside of IT grasp. IT is only tangentially about programming. It is mostly a way of thinking and a culture. I can look at an application on any platform and tell what OS its developers were native to. You just cannot expect a Windows programmer to develop good apps for Linux, even if he knows all the libraries and commands.

My point is that culture eats strategy for breakfast. Google, Amazon, and Microsoft are all technology companies. And it is not surprising that they could deliver on new bleeding edge technology.

IBM on the other hand is primarily a sales and marketing company. Being in technology is completely coincidental and subservient to that. In a way, they are mirror image of Amazon which is a technology company and being a retailer is coincidental to it.
