There are an average of 19 splices in the "last mile" of copper to the home. xDSL needs "clean" copper to avoid real attenuation problems. This will be overcome, but not widespread at least in the next few years. Cable modems ?, they still can't keep my cable working in a thunderstorm, it may happen eventually, but not any time soon. I don't see the bottom dropping out of any modem market yet.
