"I may want to get an 8100 with non-Rambus RAM so later upgrades of RAM are easier/cheaper." - You're gonna have to wait a while, maybe a long while. 8100's use Pentium 4 chips. And right now P4's support only Rambus memory (Pentium III's give you the choice of SDram or RDram depending on the motherboard). In short, if you want a P4, you get Rambus - period.

INTC is expected to introduce support for other memory types for the P4 later this year.

"...they could make it easier to do business with them." - Amen. Dell is not known for giving a world of choices to their customers.

But they are known for being the best of butt-buddies with Intel and Microsoft. So "...I'd like to order both an Inspiron and a desktop and pay for some software once." - Ain't never, ever gonna happen! For reasons that should be glaringly obvious. (Unless you wanted to try that at your local white box vendor. <g> At least then you would have a non-zero chance.)
