It means that Intel just released a new CPU that runs 40% faster than the previous one. Assuming a hedonic adjustment of every worker in america buying the new chip, they will complete their day-to-day work 40% faster. This includes typing speed, ditch diggers, burger flippers, and investment banking.

Learn to love hedonics, baby!!

"In the meantime, stocks got a pre-open lift from news that productivity grew at the fastest pace in 19 years"
Does this mean that our manufacturing base has become more efficient - or is the productivity growth a result of the FED pumping more money into the economy at record levels? Does anyone know how money supply and monetary base effect the "productivity" numbers?
