Better answer straight from a Market Maker:

Although my answer is correct it was "Not the usual case."

Usual case: A MM has a seller "in hand" (a sell order from a broker or from the actual seller himself) - the MM sells at the offer during the day and towards the close buys the "sold" stock (at some average price) from their seller. If the seller is more sophisticated and doesn't want to show himself (or show weakness in the stock), he will sell small amounts throughout the day at a price usually between the bid & ask.
