They dumped Alpha to use Itanium. Everyone knows that - it was all over the news. It might be helpful to read more publications other than Van's Hardware to give you a broader perspective on the industry.

I still think that Hammer will have quite a bit of difficulty competing with Itanium in the high end. It may have a good integer score, but I think that Itanium will have the scalability, the features, and the transaction performance to kick Hammer into next Sunday. And that's not even considering the HPC market, where Itanium's floating point should rival even the Power4.
