I talked with IDX IR last yesterday and I'll try to summarize what I learned.
With regard to IDX, ESAF and all the other biometric vendors for Novell's NMAS, no one has an exclusive deal with Novell - everyone is "on a level playing field."
That explains this quote from Novell - "Key Industry Vendors Announce Support for NMAS Fifteen top security companies also announced support today for the Novell Modular Authentication Service. Biometric, smart card, and token vendors alike announced that their specific authentication solutions would support NMAS, including ActivCard, Arcot Systems, Biometric Access Corporation, Compaq Computer Corporation, Datakey, Dialog Communication Systems (DCS), Gemplus, Identix, Keyware Technologies, Protocom, RSA Security, SAFLINK, Schlumberger, Secure Computing, and VASCO Data Security. Please see www.novell.com/products/nmas for more information." newsalert.com
As for my little discussion about "Standard vs. Supports" (see: siliconinvestor.com it appears the writers of the individual news releases from IDX and ESAF just chose different words to mean the same thing - that is they both "support" NMAS; neither IDX or ESAF or any other biometric vendor has any greater weight with Novell than anyone else. I would say that the IDX release use of the word "supports" is the better word to use to describe the situation than the ESAF word of "standard"; the word "standard" is misleading.
She also told me (because I asked) that ESAF is a licensee of Identicator's BioEngine (see description of BioEngine at identicator.com. Sorry David and Bob, but I didn't ask about pricing and/or just exactly how IDX gets money from licensees.
She also reminded me that CPQ is working with IDX so we have a heavy hitter on our side when it comes to potential sales for IDX/NMAS. This quote is from IDX's news release - "Compaq, Identix and Novell, through joint development efforts, have established a highly secure NDS authentication environment with the recent integration of biometrics technology directly into the Novell operating system," said Leigh Moore, Product Marketing Manager for Compaq's Commercial Desktop Security Products. newsalert.com
