Fed cuts rates by 50 basis points March 20, 2001 03:11 PM ET by Thomas Coyle NEW YORK -- The Federal Reserve's Federal Open Market Committee today cut its target for the federal funds rate by 50 basis points, to 5 percent. The Fed said it decided to cut rates today for a third time in 11 weeks because pressure on profit margins have hurt U.S. investment and consumption. In a related move today, the Fed also cut the discount rate -- the amount it charges banks for loans -- by 50 basis points to 4.5 percent. upside.com
