I think, TGPTNDR, you hit the nail on the head. Intel's ability to maintain market share has everything to do with their much superior marketing skill, and almost nothing to do with the things Phudd listed like support, roadmaps, reliability, etc.

Of course, it also helps Intel to be able to threaten economic or supply consequences for lack of "loyalty."

I really do think that AMD would be better off now if they had spent $100M or more additional marketing funds to build support for 64-bit and NX before Intel had anything with which to counter. They probably could have gotten comarketing of $100M or more from Microsoft and others, and would have increased sales almost as much as the cost, but there would be a higher baseline level now.
