IBM exec downplays Novell rumor NEW YORK, Aug 26 (Reuter) - A senior software executive at International Business Machines Corp on Tuesday said he was not aware of any efforts by the computer giant to acquire Novell Inc. Novell was up 1-1/8 to 10-1/8 in very heavy trading on Tuesday amid market rumors that IBM is interested in buying the network software company. ``I don't know who started it,'' IBM senior vice president and software group executive John Thompson said, ``but it's news to me.'' Thompson made the comment in a brief interview at the Java Internet Business Expo in New York. Eric Schmidt, who is chairman and CEO of Novell, is scheduled to deliver an address at the same conference Wednesday at 0900 EDT/1300 GMT.
