You seem to have a good understanding of this subject, so maybe you can explain to me why IA-64 wouldn't be efficient at running these kinds of operations. I understand the concept of not being able to know the actual code before runtime (which defeats the purpose of compile time optimizations), but I would imagine that a well developed VM would still be able to decode the .NET pseudo-instructions into op-codes with at least some level of ILP. But maybe I'm wrong, I don't know. I'm hoping that someone more knowledgeable can explain it to me.
