Iran Hormuz Blockade Would Hit LNG Hardest -Erste

Published: Mar 05, 2012

[Dow Jones] The biggest impact from a blockade of the Straits of Hormuz by Iran would be on the LNG market, not the oil market, says Erste Group. Says, "Although the first thing that comes to mind in connection with a possible blockade is the shortfall in oil, we believe that the impact on the LNG market would be substantially more severe." Unlike oil, LNG from major producers such as Qatar has no alternative export route, Erste adds. A closure of the Straits - a major trade conduit linking the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea - would affect more than a quarter of the world's LNG capacity and hit Asian consumers particularly hard.
