CONSOL Energy (CNX) and other coal miners are falling, after CONSOL said that it would idle one of its coal mines and reduce its continuous mining operating schedule to five days per week. The company said that it was responding to decreased international demand for metallurgical coal, and elevated inventories. Furthermore, CONSOL announced that Q1 sales of its thermal coal would fall "a few hundred thousand tons" below its previous guidance of 13.2M tons. In early trading, CONSOL slumped $1.53, or 4.59%, to $31.82, while Patriot Coal (PCX) sank 4.40% to $6.08, Peabody (BTU) gave back 3.15% to $30.48, and Arch Coal (ACI) fell 4.26% to $11.68.
