"Is there any way to copy a song from a CD to a file on your hard drive, that can then play from the HD without using the CD?"

Just in case anybody is interested, I've done a little searching around and it looks like you can.

The program you need (shareware and freeware) is called a CD Ripper. It takes the music file from a CD and stores it on a harddrive in a format called MP3. A nice page explaining this with several downloads is here;
mp3now.com

You also need a MP3 player, which can also be downloaded. This page explains a little about MP3 and has links to the players;
mp3now.com

It looks like there are downloadable songs all over the internet in MP3 format.

Of course, after looking around a little bit, it looks like everybody in the world knew about this MP3 stuff but me. I haven't downloaded and tried everything yet, but it looks like it will be something interesting to play with this weekend.
