Re this xDSL stuff: sounds good, but I have what may be some pretty stupid questions.

xDSL lets you do high-speed data communications over copper wire between the end-user and the CO, right? And then the CO could relay the data onward to, say, an ISP somewhere, right? Or the ISP could be co-located at the CO. Or the telco could be the ISP, right?

The crux of my question is this: we already have high-speed data transmission over copper wires from the subscriber's site to the CO and beyond. It's called T-1 service, and it's damnably expensive. How does xDSL provide the same functionality more cheaply? And what incentive does the telco have to actually provide this service, when they're making the big bucks on T-1 service?

To put it another way, how do I use this nifty new Ascend gear to network together 6 offices that are located within 25 miles of each other? And how much do I end up paying to whom?
