Dave, that is not a licence to use Ericy VW40, it is an agreement in regard to whatever is finally agreed between Ericy/Q!/ITU etc. Since Q! will not be agreeing to the absurd Ericy chip rate, you can be sure that Lucent, Philips or anyone else has not got the right to use the weird convoluted and concatenated chip rate and Reed-Solomon old-fashioned coding.

Also, you should all be aware that Teroist tactics are to NOT answer any questions. I was considering asking him whether I could send him US$1000 but thought that question would not be answered either.

Tero asked about footprints in Australia. Vodafone will have a national footprint later this year for cdmaOne, even out in the middle of the outback where there is nothing but desert. Analogue is being replaced now and cdmaOne will have near enough national coverage - for major centres anyway and analogue in rural areas especially will be converted to cdmaOne to allow rural customers to retain service.

With the supercells being tested, it seems that 200 km is going to be possible for each cell.

The national footprint will be achieved when Globalstar starts service. The Dubbo gateway is already operational.

While there are only about 20 million people in Oz, there are about 30% of them using cellphones. Maybe that's higher now.

Tero, the huge support for VW40 does not mean it is popular. What it means is that everyone knows that Q! is going to clean up with cdma2000 and there is total support from everyone except Q! and their shareholders for Q! to get LOW royalties. Fortunately for Q! the USA interests are also served by Q! being paid handsomely for the miraculous achievement of making CDMA work in mobile.

Nobody else, even with Q! technology has been able to do it effectively without Q! ASICs.

20% royalty rate is appropriate. The Koreans and others whined like 747s over the derisory 5 or 6% they pay for cdmaOne. Imagine how much money Q! will make with 20% royalty. Of course the people paying want to minimize that. They will do all the tricks they can.

But even 20% will not kill the goose that lays the golden egg because CDMA by Q! is so amazing that even higher prices would still see it by far the most attractive technology.

Remember, IS-95 breached the laws of physics, couldn't work, would fail under load, would cost way too much, wouldn't get close to the claimed capacity if it did work in some very poor fashion and all would end in sadness and litigation. Well, it is not ending yet and Q! price has soared through $80 and hit $90. For such an incredible technological achievement, Q! deserves a fortune since it will give humanity a huge boost.

The ITU stuff is is not a democratic process. This is a question of property rights and in civilized countries that means a big gang of bandits can't vote to use VW40 if it involves Q! property.

This is a difficult concept, but the USA will help with education.

Maurice

PS: Meanwhile Tero, good comment on technology trends and the next big thing. I'm delighted to say I agreed with everything you wrote. Which is weird and as I seem to agree with everything Bill Frezza writes if it doesn't include CDMA, I wonder why that would be. For some reason, we don't agree on CDMA. You and Bill Frezza think one thing and I another. I read all you say and explain to you as best I can why I disagree. For some reason what I write falls on deaf ears. It perplexes me to think that either my, your or Bill's vested interests in Q!, Nokia and Ericy respectively so blinds you two or me to the truth that we disagree and have done for years.

I'm soothed by the fact that CDMA seems to be forming an objective reality independent of our thoughts which involves many millions of handsets sold in many countries and profits booming along with revenue and the stock price of Q!

That makes me think I'm right and you and Bill are wrong. Especially since neither of you ever adequately answer points I or others make.
