AOL words things very carefully. What AOL actually said was that they were pulling the Jetson ads (they did not say they were pulling ALL ads), and that they would reduce (not STOP) direct mail advertising in those markets which have the most serious capacity problems. AOL stated that any marketing materials for which AOL has contracts already in place will continue.

The -most- siginifcant thing that I saw in the Feb 6th earnings report was the absence of January subscriber numbers. Back a quarter or two ago, I realized that AOL was consistantly reporting the quarterly earnings, and in the same press release would announce the -huge- subbsciber growth in the month following the end of the quarter being reported. This quarter, AOL did NOT report the January subscriber numbers

Anyone want to speculate on the significance of that?

The "promise" to hold membership at 8 million may be a very hollow conscession.
