There will be means testing- it's coming, I think- and that might hit you, but most Americans (even the baggers) don't want to dismantle the welfare state- once they figure out they are, in fact, dependent on it, and their kids (woopsie) won't be having as fine a time at their neighborhood school, and the police (ooops) might have to cut back, and the local parks (oh no!) won't be open, or won't be taking care of the soccer field.

The republicans backed a bad horse (thanks to the baggers) and my guess is they won't ride it to the grim finish. They'll find a way to weasel out before they have to actually do much to injure their constituents. There will be much sound and fury, but it will signify nothing. Unfortunately, we could really have reformed some things on this go round- like prisons- save a buttload of money if we kept drug offenders out of prison (if their crimes were not violent)- but the lobbies for throwing Americans in jail are too powerful. Take a look at incarceration rates under Ronnie Reagan, and then compare them to now. Pretty freaking amazing.

And what a waste of money:

I like the chart with total incarceration rate per 100k
