Consider the number of American men in that cohort killed in military combat during that period vs the number of Swedes or Australians

That might not be much of a factor. Deaths due to military deployments are a very low portion of US deaths, and in fact deaths in the military, with our two wars, are lower than they where in the past in many peacetime periods (we had a larger military so there where more people to die from non-combat related issues, and also training was on the average less safe).
