Yes on a per GB basis it would probably be much less expensive, but the price per *disk* also makes a difference. Even at $10 per GB $(1 cent per MB), a 1 sided 20GB disk would have a price tag of $200 or $400 per unit if double sided. This is getting into the space where the removable media has a high cost relative to the drive. Thats all I'm trying to point out... Maybe I misunderstood your $30 price as I thought it related to the price of the removable media rather than a price per GB.
I believe for good penetration of the pc marketplace, the media
needs to be $100 or under per unit, regardless of capacity.

Someone was suggesting that it might be useful as an alternative to
VCR tape... I think that it would have incredible difficulty in
competeing with that space since the cost of a VCR tape is under $10 and I think that it will take a long time to get that low.

If a product could be developed that used a flexible media similar to
3.5" floppy media, even if only 1/10 the 20GB capacity, there would be a very avid pc marketplace... Especially if media cost was under $10
per unit. It would essentially be replacing the 1.44/2.88 MB floppy drive with a 1000X improvement at a moderately higher cost. The market place would consume it faster than it could be produced!
Having said that, I'm not sure it is possible with NFR because of the
close tolerences required at the magneto-optical interface.

But its sure food for thought...
