One of Ampex's software development partners, OMI, can be found at

openmic.com

Ampex's Goal:

Clay Johnson of Ampex: "We wanted to sell more of our high-performance DST-310 tape drives by having greater connectivity. But, we needed to have the performance and behavior be the same from whatever platform
they were connected to. After all, what we sell is high performance. At 15 MB/sec sustained, this is among the fastest tape drives available."

"We had two immediate problems at the beginning. We had more engineering work than we could handle in-house and we had sold some DST-310s connected to IBM's AIX/6000 operating system without having a driver."

"We were looking for people outside with good skills in device driver work. We knew John Groves [President of OMI] from previous work with the DST-310" Storage Lab at Livermore. So we went to him first. We put
together a spec on how the DST-310 worked with Sun's Solaris, our reference platform. We needed a user interface that was 100% compatible with Solaris as we did not want to change CODE across platforms."

OMI Delivered:

"OMI developed the within the time limit and returned the to Ampex for testing."

Results:

The goal was achieved. OMI did such a good job that we had them then develop the drivers for Digital UNIX and HP-UX. We now [Fall 1996] have OMI upgrading the AIX/6000 device driver for version 4.x of AIX. They are also addressing problems that have appeared. While there were a few minor bugs, most of the problems are design issues. We did not anticipate all the things our customers would want to do with our drives."
