Dell, Compaq, and IBM now ship hardware with Linux pre-installed. They also offer support. What more do you want? I think he wants to use his current printer, scanner, modem, 3D graphics card... I'm not even going to bother speculating on the actual magnitude of the problem (you're probably looking at the next frontier of the Fear-Uncertainty-Doubt wars) but it is something the prospective consumer will have to look into.
