I do not trust anyone, PUNCT - we are in bubble territory and COVID 19 is an excuse. Thens of millions are in depression without work, the upper 5% drives the bubble. We are in a strange time and many ignore the global signs of upheaval. The easiest way to resurrect a country treasury is to delegalize holding something that has use and is valuable like your father story - paying an arbitrage price disconnected from reality. Not sure how much was costing to extract an once of gold then but I only presume it was more than $35. In other countries they just confiscated the gold period - nothing in return.
