What game does the Bush administration think it's playing in Korea?

Krugman should really stick to economics and not national security policy..

So here's how it probably looks from Pyongyang:

The Bush administration says you're evil. It won't offer you aid, even if you cancel your nuclear program, because that would be rewarding evil. It won't even promise not to attack you, because it believes it has a mission to destroy evil regimes, whether or not they actually pose any threat to the U.S. But for all its belligerence, the Bush administration seems willing to confront only regimes that are militarily weak.

Actually, Krugman should have ventured back to 1994 when Kim Il Sung was able to get Jimmie Carter to hop on a plane to Pyongyang to suck up to his every demand, obtaining $5 Billion worth of technological and economic assistance in exchange for halting his nuclear program.

And when Kim Jong Il finished consolidating his power after his father's death that same year, he reneged on that agreement and has been covertly working on his nukes ever since...

What would Krugman have us do?? Kiss Jong's heinie and suck up to him again?? If he wants to remain isolated, then so be it. But China's not going to go far towards increasing trade with N. Korea since they have no hard currency and few natural resources. And the Chinese economy is going to suffer due to the falling US dollar, thus even less reason to increase trade with N. Korea...

And as Krauthammer discussed in his article, we may just have to prick Bejing's ear and discuss Japan acquiring nuclear weapons of their own... That should get China's attention and force them to step on their unruly little puppet state.

But Jong is betting the US won't go that far.. And based upon the FP of the past administration, he probably has good reason to believe that.
