Jack, there have been a lot of derailments, but at the moment I don't remember one last year in Yuma.
Last year I was on the Tucson-El Paso run.
All the derailments get "solved", it's just that some are solved better than others.
Are you perhaps thinking of the head-on collision that happened in Yuma, on the tracks about where they pass under 16th Street? (But that was more than one year ago).
A desert railroad is every bit as fraught with potential dangers as a mountain railroad. The thing about the mountain railroad, is steeper grades. The railroad between Tucson-Yuma has some steep grades, but not as long or as steep as the grades between Tucson-El Paso (in particular, the part between Tucson-Lordsburg), which has resulted in a lot of broken knuckles and drawbars.
I pray that God help me to stay alert and focused and to operate as well as possible.
"Precious Saviour, thou wilt guide us, 'til we reach that distant shore, where the angels wait to join us, in thy praise forever more."
John
