I don't think there are many phone makers gearing up to make low end phones except perhaps Lenovo. Everyone who tried seemed to lose money. The low end is a moot point hardware wise

I agree on all points. Lenovo is working closely with Google, so they will likely be able to make up for the drab hardware margins elsewhere.

Of course, there's mid-tier hardware in addition to low and high end.

Would you agree that Apple, regardless of which segment of the market they're focused upon, would benefit by improving monetization of the use of their devices? It would help protect them against a cutthroat hardware war similar to the ones the plague lots of other electronic hardware manufacturers.
