Interesting point. I don't know if you have seen strawberry farms, but at the U-pick farms I go to in Indiana they have these interesting raised rows of dirt, about a foot high by about 8-10 inches wide and the strawberry plants are growing in the top of these. So apart from drainage, the benefit is also that they are a lot easier to pick.
