I would like to compare Free ISP as open television VHF channels. Not much choice and mostly commercials, and AOL or ELNK as cable TV companies, they offer much more services but with little monthly charge. They compensate each other. But the people with real purchasing power will much more likely to have cables (or AOL, ELNK in this case).
With huge cash reserve in hand, msft free ISP can in short term hurt AOL, ELNK, but in a long run, they hurt themself. In this business, someone has to pay for the dial up period. It is impossible to control people where to click so that the advertising revenue is limited.

Conclusion: hold on for long.
